The Trophy(ies) | The Competition |
|
Wed Ch'ship Pairs
The premier competition of the club. It's played as a normal Pairs duplicate but with no handicapping. It is usually the first Wednesday
of a month so pairs can have a maximum twelve entries in the year. The best N (6 or 7) scores in the year are averaged to give the
Pairs' final score over the year. Prizes are still awarded for the individual events as per normal. |
|
Sunday Ch'ship Pairs
Usually played the first Sunday in each month. The Best N performances throughout the 11 or 12 months of the competition are averaged
to give a Pairs' Score. |
|
Wednesday Handicap
Played on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for eleven or 12 months of the year. The best 6 or 7 results are averaged out and the handicap
applied to give the winner of the competition. |
|
Sunday Handicap
Takes place usually on the third Sunday in a month but this may vary due to the usual slot being taken by another event. Partnerships
must play a certain number of times to qualify(N) and the winner is the pair with the highest percentage averaged over their best
N events in the competition. N.B. From 2019 the event is played on 2nd Sundays of a month. |

The Ged Lawrenson Trophy
A pairs competition held around February each year for a Trophy donated by Ged's wife. He was a very popular member of the club and
a very good player. He used to team up quite a lot with Ken Littler, Brian Peters and Les Robinson, all sadly gone the same way. They
all had a reputation for enjoying the trophies (look left). |
|
The Spring Teams
This competition has been running as long as I can remember. In it's heyday it was an open competition for teams from other clubs far
and wide. I remember over thirty teams filling the large dance hall one week-end. The format then was Swiss teams where after every
round, your position was evaluated and if you did well you move closer to table 1(the top table). Nowadays it's restricted to club
teams but I'm sure the odd visiting team could play(but not lift the trophy). |
|
The Autumn Pairs
Played around September time. A duplicate pairs tournament for a trophy. One of the longest running competitions at the club. Some
very old and famous past members have won this event in the past. It's a pity we haven't got a complete record of the past winners. |
|
Sunday Trophy
Similar to the Wednesday Autumn Pairs but played around about the same time for the regular Sunday partnerships. A fine trophy is presented
to the winners to be held for one year. |
|
Two Clubs Trophy
The Trophy was donated by Jim Graham on his return to the North East. It is played for each year by Leigh and DATEN bridge clubs with
the venue alternating between the two. It was originally intended to be the Three clubs trophy, the other club being Newton where
Jim used to play regularly with Belle Porter. Maybe it is time to invite Newton to the next event. |
|
The Joan Wright Trophy
Formerly the Mixed Pairs. Joan's daughter presents the trophy to the club. Donated in 2019 to the event winners. |
|
The David Dowson Trophy
Awarded to the most improved pair as judged by the Tournament committee. Intended ideally for the newer players to the club.
Average
scores throughout the year are compared with the previous year to see the level of improvement.
N.B. The web page for this comp consists
simply of a list of winners for each year that the competition has been running. |
