Fallout due to COVID/move of premises/acquiring a new web host 10/9/2021 :-Author Tom Evans | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Following the move to our new location, this has obviously reduced the number of competitions
that were available previously viz Sunday Championship, Sunday Handicap, Sunday Trophy. It would be possible to restart the Wednesday Championship pairs and Wednesday Handicap pairs starting in 2022 but this is down to the committee to decide. All those compeitions just mentioned were abandoned in 2021 but progress in those competitions can still be seen via the normal navigation route(Results from top menu then Comps from Top menu of Displayed Calendar). Similarly handicapping has not been re-introduced as yet, just awaiting the feelings of the committee on this. Of course all this assumes we continue using a webhost where we can migrate all our existing data to. The effect of Covid Some of the membership are reluctant to return. They have various reasons for this but I suppose most is fear of getting an infection(not necessarily Covid). Hopefully more will return as the fear subsides. There were also a number who didn't like to have to climb stairs during our temporary move to Leigh Golf Club.Picking a host At a zoom meeting we discussed how to move forward with a new web presence. We got a 3 month free Trial with bridgewebs with a view to trying it out for a while. Admittedly you can upload results but there is a cost for the Scorer application required to do this. For the most popular scorer 'Scorebridge' this would cost £90 for the application with a license for 4 scorers(plus some annual renewal fees). Bridgewebs costs £40 per annum currently. The main problem is that we cannot easily upload our history of events or see the various competition charts that we could see previously too. Handicapping is not handled very well either. To do a comparison with bridgewebs I took the liberty of going to BLUEHOST and migrating all our data. A 3yr license was less than the cost of purchasing ScoreBridge, I still upload the results to Bridgewebs but we need a volunteer(John Russell?) to tailor the bridgewebs site to do something of a comparison. Took me just a couple of days to migrate all our data to BLUEHOST. | ||||
The Mechanics of Handicapping 9/8/2016 | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Brian Aspinall asked this question. Playing with Hazel last Sunday(7/8/16) our handicap was
-5.3, we scored 59.38 yet our handicap was reduced to -5.24. Answer :-Handicaps are calculated over last 12 mths results. The event for the 2/8/15 is now dropped and replaced by the 7/8/16. The 2015 score was 60.88 so the 12 month average will fall. He also asked why playing with Lisa in July they scored relatively poorly but their handicap was made more severe. Answer:- A bit more to this one. Relatively new partnerships(those with insufficient history) are assessed by the Scorer on the night for every event .When Sunday handicapping started in JAN 2015 Brian and Lisa were placed in this category of continuous assessment.. They should have been changed to auto-update once their history had built up. This has only been done very recently and so their handicaps have all been assessed by whoever is Scorer. The Scorers are supplied with lots of info to assist them. Tom Evans and Joe Ridyard are the handicap reviewers and can move pairs from continuous assessment to automatic update of the handicap. So I would expect that after their next event their handicap will be recalculated automatically and I also expect it to be more severe. I will be interested to see what it is. | ||||

Neuberg Scoring adopted December 2013 | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Have you ever gained a top on a board but when you look at your score on that board you find
you've a point less than you expected. When manual scoring was the only way to score events, the advice to apply an average to a particular pair was to award them the average (half a top) but they then tied with every other pair playing the board. This reduced the pair who originally had a top by 1mp and improved the bottom score by 1 mp too. Neuberg(a French mathematician) scoring tries to give every board equal weight in the overall result. It restores your missing top to something much closer to what you expected. It results in factored mps calculated to 2 decimal places on boards which have not been played the expected number of times. The method is used in all the best professional scoring programs and is the one advocated by the EBU. Click here to see Max Bavin's assessment. | ||||
